Senior Project Ideas:
1. Birth and Death Rates - SAMANTHA CAVALIER
This would be a whole package of stories examining births and deaths in the three-county area: Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Are more of us dying or being born? How many children are we having? How does this compare to the past. Analyze the data in five-year increments going back to the 1960s and the end of the Baby Boom era. Sidebar possibilities: What are people naming their children? Most common names? Profile on descendant of a person with nine or 10 children and talking with them about how many children that they are having. Also, look at mixed-race births. Sources: Census Data and then people: family counselors, socioogists, priests, ministers etc.
2. Brain Drain -
Percentage of people in our valley with college degrees. How many have left? How many are leaving? How big of a problem is it? How does our three-county area compare with others.
3. Home Buying Incentive Program in the City
Look at all of the various incentive programs encouraging people to buy in Youngstown. What are they? How successful have they been? Then, do an audit. Are people living where they say they are living? Are the city employees living in the homes that they used incentives to purchase.
4. Youngstown schools versus other city schools - SAM P.
How does Youngstown City Schools compare to other city districts in Ohio for a host of issues, including student-teacher ratio, poverty rates, graduation rates, scores on state tests, spending per pupil.
Advanced Reporting and WYSU Story Ideas:
1. Bars - Aaron Workman and Melissa Smith
Which zip code in our tri-county area has the most bars? The most bars per capita?
2. Lottery - COURTNEY DENEN
Which community in our tri-county area sells the most lottery tickets?
3. Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
How many drivers do we have in the tri-county region? How many are over 60? How many are under 18? Which group has the most accidents?
4. License Plates
What are the whackiest? Why do people do this? How much does it cost?
