Latin Placement Exam Note: on the actual exam all long vowels are marked with a macron over the vowel.
The entire examination will be based on one Latin passage. The following example is, of course, much shorter than the actually passage will be. IMPORTANT NOTE: The first half of the passage on the placement examination will contain only constructions which are presented in Elementary Latin; the second half will include many of those which are presented in Intermediate. Depending on how much Latin you have had, you may find the second half of the examination to be daunting. Do not let problems you may encounter with the second half affect your performance on questions relating to the first half.
SAMPLE PASSAGE:
pater et filius Romam venerunt ut ludos spectarent. ut per forum ambulabant, "pater," puer inquit, "aedificia tam pulchra numquam videram." pater, manum in filii capite ponens, "sic est." dixit. "in hac urbe sunt templa maiora quam in nostro oppido."
Section 1: Reading Comprehension.
The student will be asked a series of questions about the passage.
Example: What is the boy's reaction to what he sees in and around the Roman forum?
Section 2: Translation.
The student will be asked to translate a portion of the passage.
Section 3: Grammar.
The student will be asked a series of multiple choice questions touching on the points of grammar illustrated by the following questions.
