Scope of Research Activities

Materials-related research in general is one of the most prolific areas of science and engineering investigation worldwide, due largely to the overwhelming importance of materials in a wide variety of applications all around us, including anything made of polymers or plastics, metals or alloys, or any device containing electronic, magnetic, or optical components.  The interdisciplinary nature of materials research is embedded in the structure of the YSU Center of Excellence in Materials Science and Engineering (CEMSE), which is comprised of faculty, staff, and researchers from most of the departments in the College of STEM, as well as industrial collaborators from the Youngstown area.  Activities of CEMSE participants in general include the synthesis, processing, structure/property characterizations, theoretical modeling, and manufacturing engineering of metals and alloys, ceramics, nanocomposites, semiconductors, polymers, and other advanced materials.  Many of our on-going projects exemplify the core mission of the CEMSE, which is to contribute to the economic development of the greater Youngstown region.  These projects are defined by the synergistic participation of YSU students, faculty, and staff working with personnel at local companies towards the successful commercialization of products, potentially leading to the creation of new high-tech jobs in our area.
