The Foreign Language Requirement
The standard foreign language requirement is a proficiency requirement, not a course requirement.  It applies to all majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (except for General Studies) and to some majors in the College of Fine and Performing Arts.  Most students satisfy the foreign language requirement by taking elementary (1550) and intermediate (2600) in a single language at YSU.  Languages currently offered ay YSU are Arabic, Chinese, French, Greek (Ancient/New Testament only), Hebrew, Italian, Russian and Spanish (German, Latin and Swahili have been offered in the past and may be offered in the future).  High school foreign language study alone does not satisfy the foreign language requirement.

STUDENTS SHOULD CHECK WITH AN ADVISOR IN THEIR MAJOR CONCERNING THEIR FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT.

Alternate Ways of Satisfying the Foreign Language Requirement
(Please contact the Department of Foreign Languages at 330-941-3461 or e-mail the Chair at jesarkissian AT ysu DOT edu with any questions.)

YSU PLACEMENT TEST (FLPT)

Many students who have taken a foreign language in high school take the FLPT to determine the level at which they should begin their foreign language study.  The FLPT is offered throughout the year in the following languages:  French, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish.  The test is free, but each student is allowed to take the test in any given language only once.   The student's score determines placement in either 1550, 2600 or 2605; placement into 2605, in most cases, means that the student has placed out of the foreign language requirement.  Placement test results from a college other than YSU are not recognized.  Please be aware that course credit is not awarded on the basis of the FLPT.

The Department of Foreign Languages does not administer the FLPT.  Students should contact Amy Gordon, Manager, Comprehensive Testing Center (330-941-1343; ajgordon AT ysu DOT edu) to request to take the FLPT.
