Durrell, Patrick (Dr.)
NSF (National Science Foundation) Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Grant, entitled Searching for Virgo’s Intracluster Globular Clusters’, for $156,850 over a 3-year period. This grant is largely for participation by Dr. Durrell and YSU undergraduate students in the Next Generation Virgo Survey (NGVS), a program to image the entire Virgo Cluster of galaxies. The NGVS project (PI: Dr. Laura Ferrarese) involves deep imaging of a large patch of the sky (over 100 square degrees), and was been awarded 771 hours of time with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope over 4 years (initial data acquired Spring 2009), and data analysis is currently underway. Over 2009-2010, 2 YSU undergraduate students (Katy Accetta and Fred Boyer) have been actively involved in different aspectsof this research project. Dr. Durrell is also the co-lead (with Dr. Pierre-Alain Duc) on one of the science working groups in the project – the Galaxy Interactions and Intracluster Light Science Working Group. (August 2009).
