Physics major Mike Baker checks out the Maag Library bound holdings of PhysRevA.

Another physics major has joined the cadre of "published as an undergraduate."

Michael Baker was among departmental authors of the paper "Structure and symmetry in coherent perfect polarization rotation," which has been accepted for publication as a regular article in Physical Review A, one of the lead journals in the field.

Known familiarly as PhysRevA, the journal disseminates developments in the area of atomic, molecular, and optic physics and related concepts, anything from quantum mechanics to Bose-Einstein condensation and more. (PhysRevB specializes in condensed matter and materials physics.)

Both are published by the American Physical Society.

Departmental co-authors include Drs. Michael Crescimanno, Chuanhong Zhou, and James Andrews.

Mike was also honored at the 2015 STEM Honors Convocation as the inaugural recipient of the Ronald G. Tabak Memorial Scholarship.

"The Ronald G. Tabak Memorial Physics and Astronomy Award was created as a tribute to the professional life and activities of long time Physics professor, Dr. Ronald G. Tabak. During his 36-year tenure in the Physics and Astronomy Department of YSU, Dr. Tabak's primary focus was teaching Astronomy and Physics to the undergraduate population. His passion for teaching was matched only by his advocacy of higher education in the areas of math, science and technology. As such, the recipient(s) of this award will be a Physics and Astronomy major of junior or senior ranking who exhibits a passion for teaching and is active in the "life" of the Physics and Astronomy Department."

Published as an undergraduate: life doesn't get much better

YSU physics majors and student researchers were co-authors of the paper "Chromatic Control in Coextruded Layered Polymer Microlenses," which has been published in Optics Express, the international online journal of optics. Included as co-authors are Cory Merlo, Cameron Bagheri, Connor Hetzel, and James Tancabel and recent graduate, Joshua B. Petrus. The lead author was Mike Crescimanno, with contributions by Tom Oder, Chuanhong Zhou, James Andrews, and CLiPS colleagues at Case Western Reserve.

Student achievements in the spotlight

Among the students who represented Youngstown State University at the recent annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Denver, Colorado were Elizabeth (Libby) Rogenski, a sophomore physics major, who presented a poster presentation titled "Growing the Community: Grow Youngstown Student Organization" with Samantha Anderson of Poland, a finance major.

James Tancebel, a junior mechanican engineering major and student researcher with Dr. Mike Cresciamanno, presented a poster on "Undergraduate Laboratories in Quantum Optics."

Congratulations to our 2014 graduates!

Six majors iPhysics and/or Physics-Astronomy are leaving us and going on to amaze the world (and graduate schools) during Spring and Summer commencements this year.

From left: Chris Karlic, spring; Josh Petrus, spring; MikeAviles, summer; Anthony Mazzocco, summer; and Mike McMaster, spring. Missing: Brandon Latronica, summer.

Get ready world, here they come.

The language of Physics is math ...

Michael BakerPhysics Major Michael Baker knows this well, and was among 11 YSU students speaking math so well at the annual MathFest of the American Association of America and Pi Mu Epsilon that the YSU team brought home six (count 'em: 6) awards. The team broke the record of five awards set in 2005 (also by teams from YSU). No other schools has won more than three MathFest awards.
